First Poppy Book:
Lost Souls

Favorite Poppy Book: Lost Souls

Favorite Character: Ghost. Nothing to some degree.

First Encounter:
I was sitting outside on my first week of Freshman year in high school (I've been out of highschool for some months now...) and my newest friend walked up to me and said, very quietly "I'm reading a new book." She showed me the cover and said "What's it like?" And she read to me. Just one paragraph, halfway through the book. "'No, I am not okay,' it said. 'i am in terrible pain because your idiot friend surprised me with his baseball bat and my own lover betrayed me for the sake of your worthless songs, So what? I can take pain. It will pass. And if I choose to return and take my pain out of your hide, I will, pretty seer. Or, if you like, I'll shove my tongue down your throat and corrupt you with my spit. Or, if you prefer, I'll unzip your skin and kiss you with your own heart-blood on my lips. Are you tempted yet?'" For a moment the two of us rested in silence, the useless chatter of a high school choir behind us. The teacher realized our lack of attention and got snarly. She let me borrow the book a few days later, when she'd finished it. I've read it at least once a year ever since then.

What character reminds you of yourself the most: Unfortunately, there are two. I cannot pry myself away from one, nor can i distance who i am from the other. I look at Ghost and see myself reflected in the kind nature that he has, in the way he sees the world around him. His views have been kindred with my own, which is why I have such a love for the character, but there is that haunted child within me that is the very sibling to Nothing. I feel his loneliness every day, know the pain of the person turned from society. I have people that would call themselves my friends... but they aren't real. So yes, I do believe a mixture of the two.

If you could ask her any question, what would it be:  When is that story that we will one day write together begin?

Do you look like Poppy Z. Brite: Haha! in the way of the both of us having dark hair, I would say yes. Otherwise... no, not at all.

Has anything in your life mirrored an event in a book or story:
I killed and ate a little boy. No, no, I kid. No, Unfortunately there hasn't been anything that exciting in my life.

Do you know anyone like a character from a book or a story: Several. The artist that you can find in Trevor can be found in my friends Carrie and Sam. The disreguard for rules and the genral WANT to be bad that can be found in some of Nothing's friends back in his home town can be found in Dylan. Jamie is the quiet one that's very hard thinking, as Christian would be. The list goes on and on.

Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else:
Yes, actually. But those thoughts are private thoughts.

What would you like to see from Poppy in the future:
Her saying yes to writing a story with me.

First Poppy Book: Lost Souls

Fav. Poppy Book: Lost Souls

Fav. Character: The Twins, Zillah

First Encounter: Early on in high school, I read constantly to escape the demands of reality. It helped me be more creative and gave me a feeling of being supernatural. Lost Souls took my love of horror, vampires, and sexual ambiguity and turned it into a tangible interest. Since I've grown up reading Anne Rica [and being an avid Twilight hater] I thought that any other vampire novel was a blatant ripoff. I was wrong.

What character reminds you of yourself the most: I tend to fit the existential and very abrasive looks [and love of sweets and alcohol] of Molochai, but my personality is closest with Zillah. I like to dominate people with my charisma and make them feel submissive/attracted to me.

If you could ask her any question, what would it be: What goes through your mind that you would die rather than have anybody know?

Do you look like Poppy Z. Brite: Other than having black hair and a vagina, no.

Has anything in your life mirrored an event in a book or story: My bisexuality tends to lean more toward complete gender blindness, so I suppose sex without the traditional roles. I used have a Twig-Molochai closeness in my last "relationship."

Do you know anyone like a character from a book or a story: My girlfriend reminds me a lot of Steve. She is a musician and focuses on things much like he does.

Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else: I wish I could exude the ethereal and surreal aura that the twins have. To this day, I don't believe that the twins actually existed in the book's reality, however, they still had their own story and sadness wanting to be heard. The tragedy of the twins is one of the most beautifully described parts in literature I've ever read.

What would you like to see from Poppy in the future: Perhaps a memoir, or a twisted and sordid tragedy based on a person that one lived.

First Poppy Book: Lost Souls

Fav. Poppy Book: Drawing Blood

Fav. Character: Zach

First Encounter:  I picked Lost Souls up on a whim when I was in high school and it just spoke to me like no book had before.  It captured my sense of separation from the world.  It also made me look silly in goth make-up!

What character reminds you of yourself the most: I may not be anything like as attractive but I think I share many character traits with Zach.

If you could ask her any question, what would it be: How she creates such incredibly complex and deep characters.

Do you look like Poppy Z. Brite: Uh. No.

Has anything in your life mirrored an event in a book or story: There were moments in my last relationship that were very similar in intensity to the connection between Zach and Trevor.

Do you know anyone like a character from a book or a story: I know one person who is very much like Trevor in how he views the world and his life experiences.

Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else: I really wish I could experience the scene in Lost Souls where Ghost encounters the twins sitting up in the tree.  There is something so magical and weirdly beautiful in that encounter.

What would you like to see from Poppy in the future: Being a lover of short stories,  more of them would be great.

First Poppy Book: Exquisite Corpse

Fav Poppy Book: Swamp Foetus or Exquisite Corpse

Fav Character: Lucrece

First Encounter: I read Poppy's biography of Courtney Love & fell in love with her writing.  Then I picked up Exquisite Corpse & l just couldn't put it down! I've been hooked on Poppy ever since, devouring book after book.

What character reminds you of yourself the most: I guess Eddy - she's so in love with Zach, but she knows nothing will ever happen between them.

If you could ask her any question, what would it be: What music did you listen to when writing each of your books, did it inspire you further?

Do you look like Poppy Z Brite: I have similar hair, but unfortunately that's it.  I love her dark eyes & high cheekbones.

Has anything in your life mirrored an event in a book or story: Not an event, but just the feeling of discontent that a lot of Poppy's characters have.

Do you know anyone like a character from a book or story: my relationship with one of my friends is similar to the relationship between Eddy &  Zach.

Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else: I wish I could find someone as amazing as Tran or Eddy!

What would you like to see from Poppy in the future: a new anthology - I really love Poppy's short stories!

First Poppy book: Drawing Blood

Fav Poppy Book: a tie between Drawing Blood and Exquisite Corpse

Fav Character: Trevor, Zach, Eddie, Tran, Steve, Ghost, Christian, a bunch of others...

First Encounter: I was reading some vampire history book thing in the clearence section of a bookstore and her name was there under vampire fiction....I looked her up and Drawing Blood sounded awesome. It turns out it was. :)

Compare Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite:  I have never read anything by Anne Rice actually....sad, I know.

What character reminds you of yourself the most:  Umm...maybe Trevor. Or Ghost. Or Nothing

If you could ask her any question, what would it be:  I'd probably ask her about her taste in music. ^^ She mentions jazz, Nine Inch Nails and the Bauhaus a lot, and she mentioned Skinny Puppy once. All of which I like. Either that, or I'd ask why she likes New Orleans so much.

Do you look like Poppy Z. Brite: Nope

Has anything in your life mirrored an event from a story or book: That would be interesting....Well, I've been to raves...*shrugs*

Do you know anyone like a character from a book or story: not quite, unfortunately. No one I know fits that well...not at the moment, anyway

Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else:  I  really do, but at the same time I don't....bad things tend to happen to many characters in her books. lol I kind of want to meet mysterious, intelligent, dark guys though ...(there aren't many around here, sadly) and experience some weird hallucinatory trip and have it actually happen...

What would you like to see from Poppy in the future: more writings, please. :3

First Poppy Book: Exquisite Corpse

Fav Poppy Book: Exquisite Corpse

Fav Character: Tran, Zillah, Nothing, Jay, Andrew, Zach.... Come to think of it, there isn't a character I don't like.

First Encounter: I was surfing the web for books I might find interesting when I saw one described as 'Exquisite Corpse is the story of two cannibalistic serial killers in love'. (Or something along those lines.) Bought it that weekend.

Compare Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite: I haven't read that much Anne Rice. I own one of her books and it didn't hold my attention well enough.

What character reminds you of yourself the most: That's a hard one. I guess I'd say Twig and Molochai.

If you could ask her any question, what would it be: "Will you marry me?" ._.

Do you look like Poppy Z. Brite: Hm...I don't think so.

Has anything in your life mirrored an event from a story or book: I party with sexy vampires. No.

Do you know anyone like a character from a book or story: My friend = Jay. No. Seriously.

Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else: To tell you the truth, I've always wanted to tour the country in a van with a bunch of vampires. (Though I would like a hippie van with giant flowers, beads, and a hundred rude bumper stickers.)

What would you like to see from Poppy in the future: Just more kick ass stories.

Even though I got the job, (having been unemployed since June), the first paycheck is a long way off and we need prescriptions and groceries before then.

So I've put one of my few really valuable books on eBay. A limited edition (lettered R of 26) boxed Silk by Caitlin Kiernan, with art by Clive Barker, and an afterword from Poppy Z. Brite. Signed by all 3, with the inclusion of a CD of Caitlin's band (signed by her as well) performing songs from the book. The cover price was $275.00 back in 1999. The Auction starts at $250.00.

the bar was very dark, and decorated the same way it originally was - deep 70s browns and tans
certainly a blue collar bar
the bar maid slapped her liverspotted hand down in front of me and bellowed "what'll it be sweetcheeks"
i ordered a PBR (the cheapest thing on the beer board) and surveyed the room
a jukebox, few pool tables, booth seating - a shabby but homey joint
very... pittsburgh

after a few drinks my accomplice and myself noticed a green bottle with gold lettering behind the bar.
chartreuse.
i'd never actually seen it before.
i asked the burly barmaid how it was usually ordered
and she poured us up two shots at a cost of $14. steep for a dive bar.

the taste was... strange.
like nothing i'd ever tasted before. like fresh green plants and flowers and... soup. like lipton instant soup.
i enjoyed it very much.

i've since moved from pittsburgh to northwest florida. i live 4hrs from new orleans and i haven't visited yet.

Fav Poppy Book: I haven't read them all yet, but so far I'd have to say Drawing Blood
Compare Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite: why?

So I have 2 questions:

Question the first - I've been trying to find the short story Fuck it, we're going to jamaica. Any helpful hints. I know it was on the Necromantic webzine... but I've come up with nada.

Second question - I've recently read Exquisite Corpse (which I admit to reading too quickly because of squick factor.) and I don't remember Trevor or Zach being in there. What page were they mentioned on?

Thanks.

First Poppy Book: Lost Souls
Fav Poppy Book: Drawing Blood or Lost Souls. Liquor series is pretty sweet too…
Fav Character: Ghost or Trevor
First Encounter:
I was cleaning out my aunts garage with her and she found a short story book with one of Poppy’s shorts in it. I don’t remember which one but she thought I would like it, I like obscure writers like Chuck Palahniuk, and I read it a few minutes later, loved it and that afternoon I went and got ‘Lost Souls’!
Compare Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite:
I used to read Rice when I was younger but now her books lack something to me. I found what I wanted in Brite.
What character reminds you of yourself the most:
Probably Trevor at the start of ‘Drawing Blood’. I don’t trust people a lot of the time, or I trust people I don’t know well. I draw constantly and I times I think my sketch pad knows me better then anyone. Or Nothing. I don’t fit in, don’t really want to. I have maybe five friends and only two really, really close ones.

If you could ask her any question, what would it be:
I would prolly just stand there in awe. I’m rather shy.

Do you look like Poppy Z Brite:
No.. not that last time I looked.

Has anything in your life mirrored an event in a book or story:
Not so much and event but I’m really close with a friend of mind and at times I like her more then just friends and I thought for a while she liked me too but she didn’t. So.. Slightly like Steve and Ghost. Me being Ghost.

Do you know anyone like a character from a book or story:
One of my friends is a lot like Eddy. Pines over one person instead of looking for someone else who will think of them in the same way. My best male friend is like Steve, he’s really protective of me and can be an ass but at the end of the day I still love him.

Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else:
I would love to walk into my bathroom and have the sink start bleeding! Hah, umm no not that one but maybe Trevor and Zack’s relationship. I would love to but that much trust into one person and have it work right.

What would you like to see from Poppy in the future:
Just keep writing some of the best books I’ve ever read.

Hi everyone - I'm not new to LJ, but new to this community. Lots of people seem to have filled out the questionaire, so I thought I'd give it a shot (I just lurk in a lot of places usually. Which isn't really the point of being at LJ, but I'm lame about posting outside my own LJ, shoot me). I found Poppy Z. Brite's books (and this community) through the Queer as Folk fandom, where I write slash (and the ladies outnumber me about eight quadzillion to one).

Name: Alex
Birthday: March 17, 1983
First Poppy Book: Lost Souls
Fav Poppy Book: Lost Souls, Drawing Blood is a close second
Fav Character: Zach in DB, probably Nothing in LS. Hard to choose, actually.

First Encounter: I wrote a lengthier 2-part vampire fanfic, and a girl on my F-list recommended "Lost Souls". Since she gave it rave reviews and her reading tastes are similar to mine, I ordered the book and was hooked immediately.

Compare Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite: Poppy Z. Brite's writing is, IMO, more contemporary and fresh, she incorporates new ideas into vampire fiction. Anne Rice - while she is a great author in her own right - sticks closer to the more traditional lore. And Poppy Z. Brite dares to write what Anne Rice barely hints at.

What character reminds you of yourself the most: Ghost.

If you could ask her any question, what would it be: Laine in Lost Souls - WHY? And was it fun to rip my heart out and stick it in a high-speed blender?

Do you look like Poppy Z Brite: No, I'm a guy, I look nothing like Poppy Z. Brite. :D
Has anything in your life mirrored an event in a book or story: Sure, that's why I read a lot, it's a respite from the histrionics of RL. :P

Do you know anyone like a character from a book or story: Ghost and Nothing both sound like guys I'd hang out with.

Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else: Nope, things are great just the way they are.

What would you like to see from Poppy in the future: A sequel to Lost Souls with the resurrection of Zillah; I thought that Zillah/Nothing thing she had going in LS was totally hot.

Fav Poppy Book: Drawing Blood or maybe Liquor

Fav Character: Trevor
First Encounter:

About to years ago, I was big into Buffy at the time and someone on a forum somewhere sugested I read Lost Souls after being left a bit cold by the likes of Anne Rice.

Compare Anne Rice and Poppy Z. Brite:

I've only ever read one AR novel so I can't really compare.  But, I know which one I love.  I know which one has made me fall in love with New Orleans.  I know which one has made me cry my eyes out thinking I will never be so in love with someone as Trevor and Zach are. :(

What character reminds you of yourself the most:

I would probably say Trevor (pre Zach) only slightly but I do feel detatched quite a lot of the time.

If you could ask her any question, what would it be:
I would say, "Woman!  What happend to the smut?" hehe. :P

Do you look like Poppy Z Brite:

I tend not to look like women...

Has anything in your life mirrored an event in a book or story:
I wish I could say yes but no I don't there is anything.  Its not an event but the whole Steve/Ghost friendship dynamic reminds me a lot of me and my friend Lee.  I'm straight hes gay, we're incredibly close.

Do you know anyone like a character from a book or story:
I know girls like Eddy.  Totally in love with Guys they are never gonna have.

Do you wish anything in a book or story would happen to you or anyone else:
That whole first time sex between Trvor and Zach.  I wish my first time would have been that intense.

What would you like to see from Poppy in the future:
Just carrying on the EXCELNT work she is doing.  I still feel like a need more smut though :)
